Check or bet?

You said nothing about the history of the hand leading up this point, but I'd say in general, unless he is a complete retard, bet--and not a little bet, but something like 4/5 of the pot.

That card either helped him or it didn't. If it didn't, you're most likely not going to get much more out of him anyway. If it did improve his hand however, there is a good chance he is now holding at least a straight and at those stakes I suspect he'll probably call with that. If he has the nut flush or better yet a boat, I'm guessing you'll get his whole stack coming in over the top.

So what did you do?

Yeah the river illustrates another possible reason why a bet could have been better. Say he has something stupid like KJ, no spades, or even a straight with no spades. In this situation, the last spade also killed possible action.

Upside to your move is it may have gotten you 1.50 you wouldn't have got had you bet on the turn and he folded assuming he had something pretty crappy. Downside is you may have gotten that anyway had you bet the turn, plus you may have gotten more had he had something like a straight or better. Last point is if you get him to call a turn bet, he may feel obliged to call a river bet if has anything (though without a spade probably not).

I would bet 1.50, like earlier you did. I guess he was counting with another 3BB on that street to see the river.

At the end, if he doesn't bet on the river after calling You on the turn - same shit moneywise :]

If it was me, I'd check it down. Cuz if it was me, my opponent would be holding QsKs. Just sayin'...
