Tipping the dealer - I

This will be the first in a series of posts outlining my philosophy and methodology of tipping the dealer. I will start with an actual example that occurred tonight in an unnamed Strip casino.

Dealer X sits down when I have $300 in front of me, and shortly thereafter I call a shortstack's pre-flop all-in with my KK. He has KJo, making me a 91% favorite. The board runs out

9 8 7 T 4

and I lose $120 to his straight. A few hands later, I win a small pot for a $25 profit. How much should I tip the dealer?

The results of the hands have nothing to with how much you should or shouldn't tip. The dealer isn't responsible for your results. They don't control the order in which the cards are dealt.

I tip dealers for being friendly, efficient, and mechanically good at their job. That said, I will tip a little more when I win a big pot because I'm feeling richer. I've only completely withheld tips from a dealer once and it was because she pretty much berated a player for not tipping on a hand.

I would probably tip $1 on the $25 pot in the situation you described.

You should tip a dollar. You're tipping for service, not for results.

I see the point you're making but yes, you should tip the dealer a buck. Unless he/she laughed at you or high-fived the guy when your Kings were cracked--in that case, you could stiff the dealer and explain why you were doing that. I assume that didn't happen.

BTW, if you read my blog you should have known to throw away those dreaded pocket Kings as soon as you saw them.

Hmmmm, now in the situation you just described I am not sure. I understand why the others are saying that the dealer is not responsible for results, but on the flip side of this coin would it not be a bit careless to spend money you are not required to spend when you are in fact losing? There is not a rule, at least not a written one, that says tipping is mandatory in order to play poker at this casino or that casino son wouldn'[t it be a prudent move to tip when you are ahead but not do so when your losing money?

I always seem to forget after winning my first hand to tip the dealer. I don't play cash games every time I visit a casino, which is only 6-12 times a year. With that being said, I remember after winning my second hand and tip at least $2.00 and let the dealer know I forget and the extra is to make up for it. Tips are a large part of a dealers salary. Having to put up with a-hole players, bad management,etc.. and the redundancy of dealing all the time, they deserve every cent. Don't forget to tip the dealers, they need it and deserve it. Unless of course they prove otherwise.

I tip one $1 chip if I win a small pot or a big one.
